Web Submission Guidelines
Freelancers & Subscribers
Like our journal, our exclusive web content emphasizes the time-honored tradition of hunting with dogs and concentrates exclusively on the retrieving breeds. We strive to give our readers informative features and columns, nostalgia, and humor, all written by talented and knowledgeable outdoor writers. Because The Pointing Dog Journal is targeted to experienced dog owners and hunters, those who write for us must also be experienced.
Features
Feature stories of 600-1100 words should focus on the use of retrievers in hunting and training situations. The Pointing Dog Journal is for serious dog people and wingshooters. A dog’s hunting career is relatively short, so their owners hunt with them at every opportunity. Of all the sporting magazines, our readers spend the most days afield with their dogs. The readers are also knowledgeable about dog training, but they are always looking for new techniques. They travel out of state extensively to hunt, mostly looking for opportunities where they can hunt with their dogs of public land.
Subscriber Forum

- Training Tips you’d like to share with fellow subscribers;
- Stories of your dog’s First Season or a unique, Special Hunt you had;
- Which breed of dog is yours in My Breed.
- Please specify which category you are submitting under.

Every month the PDJ staff will vote and choose their favorite My Bird Dog photo from amongst the submissions sent in that month. That photo will be featured in the Online Community of The Pointing Dog Journal website. Two weeks later, we’ll post our Honorable Mention. At the end of the year we’ll post all the winners of My Bird Dog on The Pointing Dog Journal website for public voting. The photo with the most votes will be featured in the Subscriber Photos section in an issue of the magazine; and the owner/dog will be featured in an article on the PDJ website.
Rules
- My Bird Dog is open to subscribers and non-subscribers of The Pointing Dog Journal on an international scale.
- One submission per person per category/prompt. If you send multiple submissions, then we will select a photo to compete against other entries. If no category is indicated, we will select one.
- Photos will be judged on quality, subject, and suitability to the category prompt, if there is one.
- At this point, photos cannot be voted on by anyone other than The Pointing Dog Journal staff. This is something we are exploring for the future. The exception is the final public vote of all the staff-chosen photos from the year.
